SJRMC to Donate South Bend Campus Site for New Saint Joseph's High School Pending Feasibility Study
Possible New School Would Be Built on Hospital Property South of Cedar Street
The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, and Saint Joseph's High School (South Bend) announced today that SJRMC is willing to donate its property currently occupied by its South Bend hospital to the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend for a new Saint Joseph's High School, pending a feasibility study to be conducted by the school.
The hospital's property south of Cedar Street would be made available after SJRMC moves into its new facility in Edison Lakes and clears its existing site.
"Education and healthcare are top priorities of the founders of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, the Sisters of the Holy Cross," said Nancy R. Hellyer, SJRMC's President & CEO. "The possibility of donating our property for the new Saint Joseph's High School, would be perfect and a fitting way for us to fulfill the Mission of the Sisters of the Holy Cross that has guided us for over 125 years in the community. This is truly an honor for Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center."
Currently Saint Joseph's High School is investigating both the renovation of its existing building and construction options for a new facility on a new site. The feasibility study is expected to take six months, concluding by December 31, 2007. Should the study conclude that the school should renovate its existing building, SJRMC will continue to work collaboratively with Mayor Steve Luecke, the City of South Bend and the Northeast Neighborhood Revitalization Organization (NNRO) exploring all appropriate options for the hospital's South Bend property once it relocates to its new facility in 2009.
SJRMC will retain each of its three Medical Pavilions, located on Cedar Street, for medical practices and administrative and support offices, as well as its print shop and laundry, which also provides laundry services for Madison Center and Hospital, Community Hospital of Bremen, and other healthcare providers.
